Design Tip #1 by Kawiku Design Tip #1 by Kawiku
Just a very quick tutorial I made to help begginer artists to design characters. Actually, this is not really a tutorial at all, just a reference of colors to NOT put directly together if you don't want to hurt people's eyes by making poor color choices. If you have characters with very similar color palettes, you may want to read about the theory of colors to help you at designing characters.

I'm not going to explain the whole theory of colors, since I'm not too good at explaining and there are already plenty of tutorials you can find about it.

So here are two tutorials on colors made by others, containing very useful information that will help you in designing characters and even more:

It's not the colors themselves that are bad together, it's their saturation levels which is part of the point of these demonstrations.

Okay lezbe honest here

The purple/grey/black and the red/black were dull and velvet-y enough to actually look good, and the Orange in the Red/Orange is dull and reddish enough to match, and the Blue/purple had enough cyan blue spots to make it appear as if it was an exotic underwater creature.

Other than that everything else hurts my eyes.

Its the saturation tones that matter very much when it comes to coloring. If some colors are dull, then yeah, its okay.

I actually used to have a bright neon blue and purple fursona egh.

It's distressing, cringe-worthy how many people are applauding these terrible color schemes and "sparklecreature".
Even moreso that they make up most of the commentary.

Sometimes people like the drastic neon colors, otherwise known as "psychedelic" art, where neon is used as all colors including lighting and shading.

But I wouldn't call it "cringe-worthy" simply because most artists dislike and scorn the over usage of neon colors on a character. People are rooted differently to different tones of colors. Especially how I love neon accents against a dark or black background, others would prefer soft pastel shading and lighting.

Basically; don't say some color schemes are "terrible" or "distressing" simply because you've never seen them put to good use, and they are ways to fix that.

Bet 10$ I can find all of these colours used on adopts or char designs by some of the unfortunate sods we've had our eyes assaulted by.

... but some of these seems like usual sparkle, it's not so bad x) For example i think that pink with yellow seems so pretty and interesting (number 10). Also, number 11 have a natural pallete, I don't think that he has a horrible colors o.0 Some of foxes and wolves has a simillar pallete, lol.

Yes, like the yellow and blue one close to the bottom.
A lot of these would work with a more fine-tuned colour scheme.

I love #11. It's colours aren't as saturated as the others. I'd maybe darken the gray a bit though.

#20 and #21 make me sick. Blue and orange being used together should be a crime x3

The orange here is an accent, not a base colour. If you switched the light blue with orange then you'd have a problem

blue and orange can work together really well due to being complimentary colours, but as with any colours like the ones in these examples, too much saturation often makes it look terrible. for example, look at the Pokemon Mudkip, and you can see that the use of blue and orange is perfect.  I really like 9 honestly, it's not too over saturated, and red can work as a decent accent to blue.

Purple and yellow are complimentary colours and can look pretty darn nice together if it's not completey oversaturated.
